ITXM Research Institute

The Institute for Transfusion Medicine has partnered with the University of Pittsburgh to establish a Research Institute in Hemostasis and Vascular Biology to further our understanding of blood and blood disorders while creating opportunities for new and more effective treatments. Our partnership with the University of Pittsburgh enables us to conduct more extensive clinical research which directly impacts the patients and donors we serve.

Our research efforts are focused on:

  • Hemostasis and thrombosis
  • Vascular biology
  • Transfusion medicine
  • Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI)
  • Blood use in stem cell and organ transplant patients
  • Immunologic effects of transfusion
  • Molecular methods of blood typing
  • Iron status in blood donors

ITxM physicians also participate in several multicenter National Institutes of Health funded clinical trials. ITxM physicians serve as site investigators in both the Transfusion Medicine Hemostasis clinical trials network and REDSII blood center research network.

Our excellence in clinical and laboratory research provides training opportunities for medical professionals in transfusion medicine. We’re proud that we are supporting the ongoing development of doctors, technicians, and nurses who specialize in transfusion medicine. However, we’re even more excited about the new treatments and developments that we’re sure to discover as our research initiatives work to unravel some of the mysteries of human blood.
