Red Cell Reference Laboratory

Catalog of Services

Patient sample requirements for the majority of reference lab services is 10cc of clotted blood and 7cc of anticoagulated blood.  The reference lab will issue a preliminary report within 4 hours of receipt of the sample and most final reports will then be issued within 24 hours.  However, more complex problems may require additional time for resolution.

Antibody Identification - Level I

Determination of antibody specificity.  Includes:

ABO/Rh determination

bulletAntibody Detection

Antibody Identification Level III

Determination of complex multiple or high frequency alloantibody specificity.  Includes:

bulletLevel II workup.
bulletRare cells and serum.
bulletAdsorbtions.
bulletElutions.
bulletTitrations.
Compatibility Test

A procedure used to give an indication of blood group compatibility between donor and recipient.

bulletAppropriate units of  blood crossmatched on request.
Investigation of Positive Direct Antiglobulin Test - Level I

Determination of specificity of antibody coating the RBCs in vivo.   Includes:

bulletABO/Rh determination.
bulletAntibody detection.
bulletPolyspecific,IgG C3 Coombs testing.

bulletIdentification of allo-antibodies.

(autoimmune investigation requires 30cc of anticoagulated blood)

Resolution of ABO Typing Discrepancies

Confirmation of blood group.  Discrepancies may result from intrinsic properties of serum or RBCs.   Includes:

bulletForward type.
bulletReverse type.
bulletAntibody detection/identification.
Prenatal evaluation

Screening procedure for the presence of alloantibody.  Important for assessing possible risk from hemolytic disease of the newborn.  Includes:

Evaluation of Fetal Maternal Hemmorhage

Screening procedure for transplacental hemmorhage of Rho(D) negative patients.  Positive results are quantified and RhIG dosage is determined.

Cord Blood Evaluation

Important for screening for hemolytic disease of the newborn.   Includes:

bulletABO/Rh determination
bulletDAT
bulletAntibody detection/identification

(testing requires a cord blood sample)
