Centralized Transfusion Services (CTS) is a network of
integrated transfusion services which supports an extensive group of major
hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the Pittsburgh region.
Established in 1969 to provide pre-transfusion testing services, it
operates both on-site at hospitals and off-site central laboratory
facilities. Facilitated by computerization and automated testing,
technical and non-technical staff rotate among all sites. CTS functions
include compatibility testing, specialized serological testing, product preparation, issue and
medical support. Annual blood and component throughput for CTS includes over 80,000 units
of red blood cells and 100,000 units of platelets per year.
CTS also serves as an educational resource responsible for transfusion medicine
training. Academic programs supported by CTS include a transfusion medicine post-doctoral
fellowship, three pathology residencies, and two hematology/oncology fellowships. CTS also
supports the blood-banking modules of two medical technologist schools.
CTS innovations have substantial medical benefits. The CTS maximizes resources and
talent by providing a core of transfusion medicine specialists to hospitals that might not
otherwise have access to this expertise. The CTS system also allows a patient's
transfusion history to follow him or her from hospital to hospital, tracking antibodies,
transfusion reactions and other special needs.
Within the industry, CTS is internationally recognized as the leading model which
offers a blood center or group of hospitals the ideal way to centralize transfusion
services in their region.
Notable among CTS's commitments are its responsibilities to support:
