An Urgent Need for Blood Products Inspires Moms, Families and Communities

The need for blood donation is never more apparent than in emergency situations. Although people may know blood and blood products are needed every two seconds, it often comes as a complete surprise when the need becomes personal. In Kristin Belmonte’s case, the personal need for blood created an interesting full-circle set of events. She went from patient, to blood donor and donation ambassador for LifeSource, to full-time employee with Denver-based Bonfils Blood Center. Kristin had two emergency procedures during two pregnancies—the first in 2003 involved a near-death experience and the second in 2012 occurred while she was hospitalized. Altogether, she needed 42 units of blood; about five times her total blood volume. Kristin Belmonte's story 

Stephanie Arnold actually died for 37 seconds during childbirth. She lived to tell about her harrowing emergency experience because, in part, O-negative blood was available to her when it was needed. People with type O-negative blood can be transfused only with that same, relatively rare, type. O-negative is known as the universal donation blood type because there are no antigens on the red blood cells; therefore it can be transfused to anyone. The fear of needles is real, but Khaney Martin-Edmonds not only overcame that fear, she became a frequent donor and blood donation ambassador for Central Blood Bank, Pittsburgh, after her son’s cancer diagnosis.
